This drawing was made from a dissection in our (Poynter's) laboratory of a case in which the right subclavian artery arose from the beginning of the dorsal (thoracic) aorta and passed behind the esophagus. The thoracic duct divided near the origin of the subclavian and opened on each side into the venous angle (formed by the junction of the internal jugular and subclavian artery). A, aorta; Ad, descending aorta; CD, right common carotid; CS, left common carotid; O, esophagus; SD, right subclavian artery; SS, left subclavian artery; T, trachea; TD, thoracic duct. from Poynter, 1916.
