This muscle varies according to the degree of development of its vertebral slips. The insertion of the muscle has been found to extend to the eleventh rib.

Syn.: m. scalenus lumborum (Meyer, H.), ileolumbalis (Meyer, H.), rectus abdominis posticus (Luschka).
