"This diagram represents a composite of all the parathyroids frond in the twenty-five cases (figures 58 through 60, 1 - 25), plotted on a thyroid gland of average size and shape. The upper brackets indicate approximately the upper, middle, and lower thirds of the thyroid; the lower bracket the space below the thyroid gland; the numbers giving the counts of the parathyroids within each bracket. The parathyroids are represented as if the thyroid were transparent"

From Heinbach, W.F. Jr. A Study of the number and location of the parathyroid glands in man. Anat. Rec. 56:251-261, 1933.
