Note:
Those titles preceded by an asterisk (*) have not been available to the present authors, but they are included here because of their historical interest and possible availability from special collections by interested students of human sectional anatomy. All of these special references were used by Potter in his review of the topography of the thorax and abdomen. These authors' data are included in the revised version presented here because it is, fundamentally, Potter's original and extraordinary review with only minor changes and additions.
The authors given were not always cited completely or even correctly by Potter. Repairing this minor imperfection has not been an easy task. In many cases, authors were cited but not referenced; we surmise that those named were so well known that any informed reader in 1911 would readily recognize the individuals. At this time, however, those unreferenced individuals in the topography are lost in the pages of the past and, as a result, the reference list is incomplete.
